Alvaro Bolivar
Senior Research Scientist
Alvaro joined eBay in June 2003 as a member of the Labs predecessor, the Advanced Technology Group (ATG). Alvaro main research interests are Natural Language Processing, Information Retrieval and Extraction, Data Mining and, Machine Learning. In particular, his research focus is to develop methods and techniques to exploit the wealth of information that our average eBay user gives us every day. Alvaro is currently working on initiatives such as the contextual keyword extractor, a Chinese language tokenizer, an Interactive Voice Recognition (IVR) system to give our users access to eBay using a regular phone, among other things. Before joining eBay, Alvaro worked in academia as part of the Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval (CIIR) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He's the author of various referred research publications, co-author on multiple patents and holds a MS in Computer Science and a BS in Industrial Engineering with a double minor in Finance and Economics.
